While my mother is flipping out about the recent oil stain on the driveway, I was in progress of doing more maintenance on my father's BMW.

Kinja'd!!!

Right running light replaced

Battery replaced (after EIGHT FRIGGIN' YEARS!)

Summer tires installed (FINALLY!)

Even though I'm done with this car, I'm not done with BMW's yet, I still got to change the oil on both his motorcycles tomorrow.

My father reflected on that when I took the car for a test run, It's the most satisfying experience ever.

Indeed. Seeing how great or insanely fast a car goes after your magic touch, is quite satisfying.

I am shocked the battery still worked after 8 years, especially in our environment.

It always lost the effective charge for cranking after being exposed to temperatures of exactly -20C or colder, it worked perfectly fine at -19C, amazingly.

Did you have the battery programmed outside of the dealership? Mine is probably due for a change in a year but there is luckily no shortage of coders in my area..

Assuming this question is for me, my answer is no, I never needed programming on the battery.

You risk compromising the longevity of the new battery if you don't have it registered, especially if the old one was failing.

you have to program the bmw battery? To do what?

Program/Register to make sure the car uses the battery properly since it has adapted to the old battery. Varies and resets the charge rate or something, plus you can restore lost features the battery sensor will disable when your old battery really starts hitting the skids. Some owners think its a scam, and others have opted not to have it done ended up killing the battery in a year.

Bmw "efficient dynamics" chooses how to charge the battery at the most efficient rate. Coding it helps reset that "meter" for the battery, so it knows not to overcharge it due to it dying. Some cases of them exploding due to that have happened.
